The department of Applied Physics was established in 2006 in the Uttaranchal Institute of Technology to teach both theoretical & experimental Physics to all the students of engineering undergraduate courses of all trades. After the establishment of Uttaranchal University, it was actually felt that a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics with adequate engineering course contents could expand the job opportunities for degree holders in various organizations.

Applied Physics in B.Tech program: The concepts of Physics are the basis of modern scientific and technological breakthrough. Hence the department of Physics plays an important part as a component of Applied Sciences in B.Tech. Course under which the engineering students are taught Physics to enable them to understand Scientific Method.

B.Sc (Hons) Physics: This is a Three Years Undergraduate Program .The thrust of this program is to impart extensive knowledge of Physics both in theoretical and practical spheres. This academic course involves the study of wide range of theories, such as, relativity, quantum, mechanics, atomic, nuclear and particle physics, lasers and instrumentation, etc, besides these the students will also study the subsidiary papers in English, Mathematics and Computer Application. B.Sc (Honors) offers numerous career options. Physics Degree holders are very much in demand, with employment opportunities for Physics graduates expanding all the time. It is also a basic degree for those who wish to pursue Masters Degree in Physics. This program also enables the students to undertake an independent research project in an area of Physics under the supervision of an academic staff member.

M.Sc. Physics: M.Sc. Physics is a two-year program. The course follows the semester system over the annual mode and is divided into 4 semesters. The curriculum is enriched with the core subjects, seminar, elective papers and dissertation. Master-of-Science in Physics aims to continue, deepen and broaden studies begun at the Bachelor level and qualifies students for a scientific career or a leading position in higher education, industry and research. This course covers the basic knowledge of various specializations like Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science & Nanotechnology and Electronics. After the completion of this course, students can opt for M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Physics. M.Sc. Physics graduates can get jobs in Research Labs, academic and education institutions, atomic and space organizations, meteorology departments, medical industry etc. and can work as Research Scientist, Lecturer/Professor, Medical Physicist, Radiation Physicist, to name a few.
