Microbiology is a broad discipline of Biology which deals with the function, structure and existence of the microscopic organism with particular emphasis on the biology of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoan parasites. Microbiologists are needed to do the research required for the future battle against infectious diseases worldwide and understand the environmental importance of microbes & exploit them for food production, biotechnological & industrial applications. The role of Microbiologists lies in diagnosis, treatment & prevention of diseases, food safety, development of green technologies and tracking the role of microbes in climate change.
The Department offers a very robust and forward-looking programme in the general and applied areas of Microbiology to prepare its graduates for their important role in the advancement of life. The programme is designed to nurture the students with in-depth knowledge in various fields of Microbiology. Our mission is to impart and develop skill based scientific temper and technical expertise to produce trained microbiologists. The programme aims to give students a sound exposure of the theory and practice of Microbiology and equip them with adequate research techniques to enable them to function as Lecturers in universities and other tertiary institutions, Research Officers and Consultants in varied fields of application of Microbiology. The programme content endows students with adequate practical knowledge and hands-on experience and enables them become self reliant as producers of many analytical, food and industrial products from microbial activities. The program intends to produce world class microbiologists who can compete with their counterparts the world over and fit into advanced programmes within the country and outside it.
Microbiology is, at present, one of the fastest moving disciplines in Life Sciences. The scope of Microbiology is huge because of the involvement of microbiology in various fields such as pharmacy, medicine, agriculture, food, dairy industry, clinical research, water industry, nanotechnology, chemical technology and environmental microbiology, including climate change studies. Microbiologists also work in hospitals, universities, medical schools and a wide variety of other industries ranging from agriculture to the space industry.
