Law College Dehradun, faculty of Uttaranchal University began its series of Guest Lectures scheduled for the Academic Session 2018-19 on 3rd August, 2018. The Lecture was given by an eminent personality Prof. (Dr.) Viney Kapoor Mehra (Commissioner – State Information Commission, Punjab & Former Head – Law Department, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar). She has a vast experience of more than 25 years in the field of teaching and research.

Speaking on the topic “RTI Act is a potent tool in the hands of common man” she focused on creating awareness among the students about the purpose and functioning of RTI Act. Right to Information Act, 2005 is an Act passed by the Indian Parliament which gives right to any Indian citizen to access information from any Government or Government-Funded Organizations. The Act which was implemented on 12th October 2005 aims to bring about transparency and accountability in the functioning of public authorities. She also mentioned several mega scams which have been exposed and also mentioned that the information can be claimed as an individual and not as a group or organization. The students were also acquainted with several aspects like the process of RTI, the organizations covered under RTI, functions of a PIO, Chief Information Commissioner. It was also clearly stated that the duty of a PIO is only to provide the already available information and not to create or generate any kind of data or information. Dr.Viney having served in various capacities has a wide exposure and deliberated the key points including the grey areas of the RTI Act in a vivid manner.

The enlightening lecture on RTI concluded with a Thank You Note delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, wherein he conveyed his heartfelt thanks to Dr. Viney for sharing her wide experience and knowledge with the students. He also extended his appreciation to Mr. Sukhwinder Singh, the Convener of the event and the Training and Recruitment Division for coordinating the event in a successful manner. Present on the occasion were hundreds of students and all the Faculty Members of Law College Dehradun.
