Uttaranchal College of Applied and Life Sciences, organized a National Seminar on ‘Conservation of Himalayan Biodiversity and Environment’ on 17th September, 2018. The Seminar was inaugurated by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Chancellor of the University Mr. Jitender Joshi, Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) N.K Joshi and Principal – UCALS, Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh welcomed the Keynote Speaker Padamshree Dr. Joshi by presenting him a bouquet, shawl and a memento.
In his Welcome Address, Vice- Chancellor of the University, Prof. (Dr.) N.K Joshi praised the contributions of Dr. Joshi towards Uttarakhand and his concern for the environment.
The Seminar was conducted under the able guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Principal-UCALS and coordinated by Dr. Nishesh Sharma Head-Department of Biotechnology, UCALS and Dr. Bharti Ramola, Coordinator-Eco-Club, Uttaranchal University.
Dr. Bharti Ramola was the Master of the Ceremony. She gave a brief description of the vast contributions of Padamshree Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi. His works cover 2800 villages and 15 states of India, including 9 states of the Himalayan region. He, in his 35 years of social dedication, has worked on mobilization of community of different areas for their resource based economic development.
Recipient of many awards, viz., Jawahar Lal Nehru Award by the Indian Science Congress in 1999, Social Science Award for 2001. Padmashree Award in 2006, and Jamnalal Bajaj Award in 2006 to name a few, Dr. Joshi is a green activist, social worker, botanist and the founder of Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organization (HESCO), a Dehradun based non-governmental organization involved in the development of environmentally sustainable technologies for the agricultural sector.
Dr. Joshi has launched several social programmes, based on resource-based rural development, such as Women Technology Park, Technology Intervention for Mountain-Eco System, Ecological Food Mission in Mountain and Women’s Initiative for Self Employment (WISE) and has been reported to be successful in providing the villages with water mills, composting pits, toilets, plan-based drugs & herbal pesticides and rainwater harvesting techniques.
In his speech Padamshree Dr. Joshi talked about how students should be more conscious about the benefits of a healthy environment and understand the importance of natural resources being provided free by our surroundings. He laid emphasis on keeping our rivers clean and how we can help in the rejuvenation of soil by burying the mortal remains of any living being in the soil.
In his address Principal-UCALS Dr. Ajay Singh stressed on the protection of environment by avoiding usage of plastic in daily routine and undertaking environment friendly activities. He motivated the students to lead a healthy life led by moral values.
A Prize Distribution Ceremony of the events conducted by Eco-Club on the occasion of ‘Earth Day’ and ‘Himalaya Day’ was also conducted. The prizes were distributed by Padamshree Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi, Shri Jitender Joshi, Prof. (Dr.) N.K.Joshi and Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh. Padamshree Dr. Joshi was highly pleased by the activities of the Club and congratulated the winners.
A Poster Presentation was organized to celebrate Himalayan Week & Ozone Week. More than 80 students participated in the event. They displayed their concern for the environment by displaying informative and artistic posters.
The Guest of Honor Padamshree Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi appreciated the efforts of Uttaranchal College of Applied and Life Sciences, especially of Eco-Club and Biotech Club, for the organization of such meaningful activities which have a major impact on the life of every individual.
The seminar concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Principal-UCALS Dr. Ajay Singh. All the faculty members, staff and students of UCALS including many members of Eco- Club of the constituent colleges of Uttaranchal University were present on the occasion.
