Department of Food Technology, School of Applied and Life Sciences (SALS) organized a Webinar on “Food Waste Management and Importance of Medicinal Plants in Food Industry” on 24th June, 2020. The session began with gracious blessing of Mr. Jitendra Joshi, Chancellor of Uttaranchal University, motivation of Prof. Dr. Rajesh Bahuguna, Vice Chancellor (Officiating) of Uttaranchal University and guidance of Prof. Dr. Ajay Singh, Principal of School of Applied and Life Sciences as the chairman of the webinar.
First session began with introductory information and schedule which was delivered by Dr. Shilpa Sharma, Convener of the webinar. She introduced guest speakers Dr. Sugandha Singh, HOD of Department of Biotechnology, Sant Hirdaram Girls College, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Dr. Ashok Kumar Rathoure, Managing Director, Biohm Consultant Pvt. Ltd., Surat (Gujarat).The aim of this webinar was to know about different medicinal plants and their role in food industry and management of food waste.
In the welcome speech given by chairman of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Ajay Singh, Principal (SALS) and Dean Research welcomed all guest speakers and participants. He motivated all participant and congratulated all food technology team for conduction of the webinar. He focussed on the use of food waste management in real life.
The first guest speaker, Dr. Sugandha Singh initiated her talk with importance of food, its societal role, growth of food processing sector, trends in foods industry and also discussed the role of medicinal plants along with examples in food industry. She discussed how urbanisation, dietary habits, awareness, accessibility affects the consumer lifestyle patterns. She also discussed about importance of medicinal plants and its role to curb the pandemic Covid-19 infectivity.
The second guest speaker was Dr. Ashok Kumar Rathoure has delivered his talk on food waste management. He initiated his talk with discussion on global food loss and how food wastage increases the carbon footprints resulting in increasing level of greenhouse gases day by day. He also discussed about the various advanced methods of managing these food waste.
The entire workshop organised and coordinated by Dr. Shilpa Sharma with the coordination of Ms. Bhawna Bisht, Organizing Secretary along with Ms. Nitika Rathi, Dr. Shilpa Sharma, Mr. Rajeev Singh and Mr. Prateek Gururani, organizing members of this webinar.
Overall 105 participants from different places of India such as Madhya Pradesh, Agra, Delhi, Surat etc. were registered for the webinar out of that 105 were highly active during this webinar. Participants from different fields of sciences such as Food Technology, Agriculture, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics, Life Sciences participated in this webinar. All queries of the participants were cleared by our guest speakers.
At the end of the webinar, vote of thanks was delivered by convener Dr. Shilpa Sharma to guest speakers for sharing their valuable knowledge and all participants who have cooperated and take out their valuable time to participate in this webinar.
