Department of Food Technology, School of Applied and Life Sciences (SALS), organized a Webinar on “Food Waste Management and Importance of Medicinal Plants in Food Industry” on 24th June, 2020. The session began with the blessings of Shri. Jitender Joshi, Hon’ble Chancellor of Uttaranchal University, motivation of Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Bahuguna, Vice Chancellor (Officiating) of Uttaranchal University and guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Principal of School of Applied and Life Sciences and also the Chairman of the Webinar.
The First Session began with introductory information and schedule which was delivered by Dr. Shuchi Upadhyay Tiwari, Head- Department of Food Technology and Convener of the Webinar. She introduced the Guest Speakers, namely, Dr. Sugandha Singh, Head – Department of Biotechnology, Sant Hirdaram Girls College, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Dr. Ashok Kumar Rathoure, Managing Director, Biohm Consultant Pvt. Ltd., Surat (Gujarat).The aim of the webinar was to know about different medicinal plants and their role in food industry and management of food waste.
In his Welcome Speech the Chairman of the Webinar, Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Singh, Principal –SALS and Dean – Research and Studies, welcomed the Guest Speakers and the participants. He motivated the participants and congratulated the Organizing Team for the conduction of the webinar.
The first Guest Speaker, Dr. Sugandha Singh, initiated her talk elaborating upon the importance of food, its societal role, growth of food processing sector & trends in foods industry and also discussed the role of medicinal plants along with examples from food industry. She discussed how urbanisation, dietary habits, awareness and accessibility affect consumer lifestyle patterns. She also discussed about the importance of medicinal plants and its role in curbing the pandemic Covid-19 infectivity.
The second Guest Speaker, Dr. Ashok Kumar Rathoure, delivered his talk on Food Waste Management. He initiated his talk with a discussion on global food loss and explaining how food wastage increases carbon footprints resulting in increased level of greenhouse gases day by day. He also discussed about the various advanced methods of managing food waste.
The entire Webinar was organized by Dr. ShuchiUpadhyayTiwari (Head- Department of Food Technology) with the coordination of Mr. Prateek Gururani (Organizing Secretary) along with the members of the Organizing Team, namely, Ms. Nitika Rathi, Dr. Shilpa Sharma, Mr. Rajeev Singh and Ms. Bhawna Bisht.
Overall 431 participants from different places of India such as Bhopal, Agra, Delhi, Surat,Yamuna Nagar, Indore registered for the webinar. Participants from different fields of sciences such as Food Technology, Agriculture, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics, Life Sciences participated in this webinar. The queries raised by the participants were duly resolved by the Guest Speakers.
The webinar concluded with Vote of Thanks delivered by the Convener Dr. Shuchi Upadhyay Tiwari towards the Guest Speakers for sharing their valuable knowledge and towards the participants for actively participating in the event.
